AWS incremental workload funding (IW) is funding a vetted AWS partner can request when a startup already on AWS launches new work: a new AI feature, a new customer or a new contract. For startups it is usually $50K to $150K. Depends on the workload; AWS approves. You do not apply for it yourself. Your matched partner files it.
It is funding an AWS partner can request for new work a startup adds on AWS. "Incremental" means the work comes on top of what you already run.
Three examples, in plain words. You add an AI feature that runs on Amazon Bedrock (see AWS credits for Amazon Bedrock). You win a customer that needs its own environment. You sign a contract that needs new AWS infrastructure. In each case your AWS usage goes up because of new work, and a partner helps you build or run it.
IW is about what you are adding. Your current AWS usage is the baseline, not the thing being funded.
AWS does not describe IW funding on a public page. What is public is the general picture. AWS's partner funding page says AWS Partners can get funds "for partner-led opportunities from development to deployment". Partners submit and manage those requests in the AWS Partner Funding Portal inside AWS Partner Central. Several AWS consulting firms also describe an incremental workload program on their own websites.
So the description on this page comes from how AWS partners file the work and from CloudRoute's partner records. The exact program name, rules and amounts sit with AWS and can change. Your partner can tell you which program it will file under.
You are already on AWS and are launching new work: a new AI feature, a new customer or a new contract. Your matched AWS partner files the request. Condition: The new workload qualifies and AWS approves it.
Your matched AWS partner files it. AWS decides. You do not apply for it yourself, and CloudRoute does not file anything.
Partner funding is an AWS Partner benefit. AWS's partner funding page is written for partners: "As an AWS Partner, you can unlock funding benefits." A startup cannot open a funding request there. That is why you need a partner for IW, MAP or POC funding.
Activate works the other way round. You apply for it yourself, and no partner can file it for you. The table shows every route side by side.
Partner amounts are from CloudRoute's partner records. Activate amounts are from AWS's credits page. Both checked on October 10, 2026.
| Funding | Who files it | Amount | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) | Your matched AWS partner | $50K to $150K for startups. Depends on the workload; AWS approves. | You are not on AWS yet and want to migrate. |
| Proof of concept (POC) funding | Your matched AWS partner | $50K to $150K for startups. Depends on the workload; AWS approves. | You want to test something, whether or not you are on AWS today. |
| Incremental workload (IW) funding | Your matched AWS partner | $50K to $150K for startups. Depends on the workload; AWS approves. | You are already on AWS and are launching new work: a new AI feature, a new customer or a new contract. |
| AWS Activate Founders | Founder applies | $1,000 to start, up to $5,000 | Self-funded startups with no investor or accelerator behind them. |
| AWS Activate Portfolio | Founder applies | up to $200,000 | Startups backed by a VC firm, accelerator or angel investor that is an AWS Activate Provider. |
| AWS Credits for AI Startups | Invite only (AWS account manager) | $200,000 or more, by invitation | AI startups ready to scale after Activate Portfolio, invited by AWS. |
AWS sets the rules and decides each request. Before it files, a partner will want clear answers to these questions.
If most answers are yes, the work is worth a partner's look. If not, the partner tells you, and the match costs you nothing.
Your matched partner files all three, and AWS approves each one. The difference is your situation.
A common case: you test a new AI feature first, then put it in front of customers. Testing it is a POC. Running it for real is new work on AWS. Your partner tells you which route fits each stage, and AWS decides.
More on each: MAP for startup migrations, POC funding for startups and how much AWS funding a partner can file.
| Route | Your situation | What the partner does | Public AWS source |
|---|---|---|---|
| IW (incremental workload) | You are already on AWS and are launching new work: a new AI feature, a new customer or a new contract. | Scopes the new work, estimates the new AWS usage and files the request | None. From AWS partners and CloudRoute partner records |
| MAP (Migration Acceleration Program) | You are not on AWS yet and want to migrate. | Assesses your current setup, plans the move and files for MAP funding | AWS MAP page |
| POC (proof of concept) | You want to test something, whether or not you are on AWS today. | Scopes the test and what success looks like, and files for POC funding | AWS partner funding page |
For startups, partner-filed funding is usually $50K to $150K. Depends on the workload; AWS approves.
That range is from CloudRoute's partner records, not an AWS price list. AWS does not publish IW amounts. The amount follows the new work: what it is, which services it uses and how much AWS usage it adds. A partner cannot promise a figure before AWS decides.
For a self-funded startup already on AWS, compare it with Activate Founders: $1,000 to start, and AWS says select startups get up to $5,000. If you have real new work coming, IW is usually the larger route.
Partner funding programs reach about $1M, but that tier is for enterprises such as banks, hospitals and municipalities, not startups.
One page of facts is enough. The partner writes the request.
Sometimes you do not need a partner at all. Here is the honest list.
If none of these describe you, and you have new work coming on AWS, one conversation with a partner can tell you whether it qualifies.
You fill in a short form: what you run today, what you want to move, test or build, your stage and your region.
We read your answers and pick one vetted AWS consulting partner that fits the work, the stack and the region. We reply within 24 hours; your matched partner reaches out within 5 business days.
Your matched partner scopes the new work with you. Then it checks whether it qualifies for incremental workload (IW) funding. IW is for teams already on AWS that are launching something new: an AI feature, a new customer or a new contract.
If the work qualifies, the partner files the funding request with AWS. AWS reviews it and decides. The amount depends on the workload.
CloudRoute is free for startups. Partners pay CloudRoute a monthly membership plus 10% of AWS-approved funding.
AWS Activate credits are separate, and you apply for them yourself. Use Activate Founders if no investor backs you. Use Activate Portfolio with the Org ID or invite from your VC, accelerator, incubator or angel group if it is an Activate Provider. A consulting partner cannot apply for Activate on your behalf.
